The purpose of mastering is to reign in the volume levels and dynamic EQ range of your final mix so that your song reproduces well on consumer grade audio equipment and leaves plenty of headroom for your listeners and fans to tweak their playback system's EQ to hear what they want to hear.
A good master will roll off a portion of the low and high end; and balance out the low, mid and treble frequencies so that they are all equally present and may be adjusted by listeners as they please. It will also stabilize the volume levels so that they retain dynamics and so that the quiet passage are not too quiet and the loud passages will not overload speakers.
