Album Length:
How many songs should I put on my Album/CD?
Two better questions:
1. Do you have a big enough following to justify releasing an album?
If not you are better off focusing on releasing single songs.
2. How long can you hold a listener's attention before they become bored or need a break?
There is a reason so many successful classic rock albums average around 8 songs and a total length of about 45 minutes. It is difficult to hold the listener's attention longer than that.
Divide your songs into the A and B side of your album (even if you're releasing a CD).
Group your songs together in a way that creates an interesting experience for the listener, and takes them on a journey with varying tempo, moods and themes that will hold their attention.
Try to keep each side to around 22 minutes.
By doing so, you will be focusing on how your fans actually listen to music in the real world, factoring in food, drink and bathroom breaks.
